Authenticity Standards

As designer, costume historian, and seamstress at Three Graces Historical Clothing my priority is creating a historical reproduction that is both aesthetically pleasing and strictly authentic. As a living historian I have always abided by the highest standards of authenticity and you will find no less in my faithfully reproduced historical clothing. Each garment is extensively researched through original garments and images. All patterns are based off of original clothing of the era. Garments are made in my studio using a combination of machine and hand sewing and recreated using top quality fabrics correct to the era and style of garment.

Machine vs. Hand Sewing

All clothing reproductions are machine sewn with hand detailing where appropriate. Clothing made from eras prior to the invention of the sewing machine, that would have been hand sewn during the era, will be machine sewn with hand stitching in the areas where stitching will show. From the exterior, the garment will meet the highest authenticity standards. Sewing a garment by hand would take far longer than by machine and would raise the price of the garment significantly. Clothing from the 1850s onward will be sewn by machine and may include machine topstitching where appropriate as well as hand finishing. Original garments are scrupulously referenced in these cases to determine where a garment should be hand sewn and where a sewing machine can do the job.
